“Mumma, Mumma, Mumma…….”

Being a toddler mom, I keep hearing this word throughout the day. Sometimes with reason and sometimes just for the sake of calling. Sometimes to figure out things and sometimes for help. My little one is too busy and keeps me busy as well. The moment I take my first bite of the meal, her buzzing antenna gets activated and from any corner of the home she is ON. Omg!! it’s 6:00 a.m., time for me to resume writing and Wallah!! In a feeble tone, Vanshika calls “Mumma Good Morning.” I felt like telling her “It will be a busy morning instead beta!” But what can one expect from a two-year-old?

The challenge of a mom is sometimes overwhelming but gets wiped out the moment you see those sparkling eyes searching for you and sitting on your lap. However, one cannot be off track. Hence, I am here to help each one of us.

1. Establish Consistent Routines

Consistent routines are like a compass for toddlers. They provide a sense of security, helping children know what to expect throughout the day. Regular mealtimes, nap times, playtime, and bedtime routines create a structured environment that supports a toddler’s physical and emotional well-being.

According to PubMed, establishing a routine is crucial for kids. This acts as a catalyst for academic performance and social skills. A planned routine is associated with better sleep patterns, improved behaviour, and reduced tantrums in toddlers. Moreover, toddler moms benefit by planning their schedules and utilizing their time.

I am a work-from-home mom, so I usually wake up at 5:30 a.m. when my daughter and husband are asleep. Early mornings are the best time for writing (no disturbance so better thought process). Once my daughter is up, I pause for a while and resume when she sleeps after having lunch (1:30 p.m. sharp). At around 3:30 pm she wakes up and her next cycle for sleep is scheduled to be around 9:30 pm. I have segregated my work in such a way that neither I fall short of my commitments, nor do I overlook family.

2. Effective Communication with Toddlers

Toddler feels valued and understood when someone has an eye-to-eye contact conversation with them. Moms can start communicating even when a child is too young for speech. It can play a crucial role in language development. Effective communication involves active listening and using simple language that toddlers can understand.

Parentese is a way of communicating with the baby that involves the elongated use of vowels in a happy and engaged way. Babies take it more seriously compared to when parents just mimic them by babbling.

Helloooooooo, byeeeeeeee, goooood mooorning. Moms, if you talk to your baby in this manner, it is likely that your child will pick up speech early.

I tried this with Vanshika. I was amazed at how quickly she adapted her speech. I even talk to her in multiple languages (Maithili, English and Hindi) now. She responds to each one of them. Last night I was surprised at how she sang along with me (I usually sing her a song during bedtime).

3. Positive Discipline Techniques

The toddler phase is notorious for testing boundaries and asserting independence. While discipline is essential, resorting to punitive methods can be counterproductive. Positive discipline techniques focus on teaching children appropriate behaviour rather than resorting to punishment.

Moms, you can moderate your toddler’s behaviour by diverting their attention. Ask them to help you while you are in the kitchen/ any household work. Set clear boundaries like telling them they cannot have more than one candy at a time. Teach them healthy habits like the benefits of maintaining a healthy hygiene routine. Reward them (give them a pat on their back or just a kiss) when they accomplish any task like organizing their play area. This will make them aware of their limits and boost their self-esteem at the same time.

I know Vanshika has a liking for bananas. So sometimes I assign her a task and when she does it, give her a banana as a reward. The joy in her eyes expressing, “Thank You Mumma” is unmatched. Moms, you need to find ways to teach discipline in a relatable way. Do not put too much pressure on your child. Make it age-appropriate and enjoyable!

4. Encouraging Independence and Exploration

Toddlers are carefree, curious about anything and everything and eager to explore and learn the world around them. Moms, let them be in their zones. Their rapidly developing cognitive stimulus concretes self-confidence and creativity.

I register a lot of queries from my daughter every day. One day I saw her trying to read a newspaper exactly the way her father reads. Although she was unaware of the written content, she recognized a picture of a lion on one of the pages. She immediately pointed out and said, “Mumma Lion”.
