Chandrayaan 3

“Thundlayaan”.

My 2.5-year-old daughter was humming this word while we were watching the successful landing of India’s lunar mission- Chandrayaan 3 on 23 August 2023 at 6:04 pm (live). It was a proud day for all of us. Even my kid danced and clapped when she heard the News Reporter say something about her “Thanda Mama Dul Ke….”

I reached my destination and you too!

Chandrayaan 3

What is Chandrayaan 3?

Chandrayaan 2’s failure was followed up by Chandrayaan 3, which is ISRO’s third lunar mission. It was launched on 14 July 2023 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre and entered the lunar orbit by 5 August. On 23 August, Chandrayaan 3 soft-laded to Shiv Shakti Point which is 600 km away from the Moon’s south pole.

As of 28 August 2023, Chandrayaan 3 has been successful in achieving two (safe and soft lunar landing and showcase rover movement) of its three objectives while the third is under trial.

India was celebrating with claps, smiles, tears, hugs, praises and applause. People connected with this update and watched the successful landing of Chandrayaan 3 live. Debates like how will Chandrayaan 3 benefit India, how Chandrayaan 3 is different from Chandrayaan 2, what will Chandrayaan 3 do on the moon and more have started to evolve.

Chandrayaan 3: how to inspire kids

How can Chandrayaan 3 be a role model for kids?

Chandrayaan 3 can be an inspiration for kids in many ways.

  • Face Challenges and Come Out with Flying Colours: Only three countries had successfully landed on the moon before. With the failure of Chandrayaan 2, it was India’s turn to show the world that with determination, dedication and scientific innovation, such ambitious goals can be achieved. Kids can adopt this aspect in their lives and move ahead.
  • Inclusivity and Diversity: The team of Chandrayaan 3 had diverse backgrounds, but a common goal. Kids can adopt this aspect and break stereotypes.
  • Teamwork: Chandrayaan 3 might not have been a successful mission if the team members did not move forward in a single direction. It is very important to acknowledge the opinions of fellow team members.
  • Embracing Failure: The ISRO team did not give up their dream to successfully land on the moon even with the failure of the previous lunar mission (Chandrayaan 2). This resilience can impart a crucial life lesson to kids: failure is a stepping stone to success. It’s okay to face challenges, make mistakes, and learn to achieve goals.

What are STEM Subjects?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These are the four main disciplines that are essential for understanding the world around us and for solving problems.

  • Science: This includes biology, chemistry, physics, and astronomy.
  • Technology: This includes engineering, computer science, and robotics.
  • Engineering: This includes civil engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering.
  • Mathematics: This includes algebra, geometry, and calculus.

How do I recognize that my child has an interest in STEM subjects?

Every child is different and so are their interests. Although kids might show some signs of interest towards STEM subjects from early childhood, they can even develop interest as they grow up.

Parents can just watch for any such signs. Here are a few ways to recognize that your child has an interest in STEM subjects.

  • Curiosity: If you find your toddler busy in dismantling and reassembling his toys. The eagerness to know which two portions of the toy are joined, how the light works inside it, how sound is generated and more. These might be a sign that your kid can adopt an interest in STEM subjects.
  • Problem-solving: Children often enjoy solving puzzles, challenges, or problems, even if they’re not related to schoolwork. They may enjoy working with building blocks, assembling models, or experimenting with household items.
  • Advanced Reading Materials: An early interest in books, magazines, or websites related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics can suggest a budding interest in these subjects.
  • Interest and performance in STEM subjects: Consistently good grades or a strong liking for subjects like mathematics and science at school can be a straightforward sign of interest.
